A few years ago I trained with a PT and we did the same six-minute ‘black snatch’ set I practiced today.

  • 1 min 2 x swing, 1 x snatch
  • 1 min 1 x swing, 1 x snatch
  • 1 min snatch only
  • Switch hands and repeat

He used a 12kg kettlebell, I used a 20kg.

At the end he looked at me and said:
“Mike, you’re a machine.”
I remember it because I don’t really think I am.

What can look like extraordinary ability from the outside is often just the accumulated effect of doing something consistently for a very long time.

The repetitions become quieter, the timing improves and the movement becomes economical.

Things that once required concentration begin to happen almost without thought.
And every so often, something clicks; that’s the bit I really enjoy.

It’s not about becoming a machine but becoming more skilful over time.

The practice continues…

Maddie, meanwhile, had spent most of the day asleep. She briefly interrupted her restoration to see off a tabby cat, before returning to her duties. At 16, she’s clearly got the efficiency of movement thing figured out.

She’s 16, I’m not a machine and apparently, neither is she. 🐈🤣
